पर्यावरण और सतत विकास विभाग, राजीव गांधी साउथ कैंपस, बनारस हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय में 1 फरवरी 2020 को वेटलैंड्स और जैव विविधता पर एक चर्चा सत्र आयोजित किया गया था। परिचर्चा का नेतृत्व विंध्य बचाओ के सुधांशु कुमार ने किया।

पूरी दुनिया में 2 फरवरी को विश्व आर्द्रभूमि दिवस (World Wetland Day) के रूप में मनाया जाता है । गौरतलब है कि आर्द्रभूमि दिवस का आयोजन लोगों और हमारे ग्रह के लिये आर्द्रभूमि की महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका के बारे में वैश्विक जागरूकता बढ़ाने के लिये किया जाता है। 2 फरवरी 1971 को विभिन्न देशों द्वारा ईरान के रामसर में दुनिया भर के वेटलैंड्स के संरक्षण हेतु एक संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किये थे, इसीलिये इस दिन विश्व वेटलैंड्स दिवस का आयोजन किया जाता है। रामसर वेटलैंड्स कन्वेंशन एक अंतर-सरकारी संधि है, जो वेटलैंड्स और उनके संसाधनों के संरक्षण और बुद्धिमतापूर्ण उपयोग के लिये राष्ट्रीय कार्य और अंतर्राष्ट्रीय सहयोग का ढाँचा उपलब्ध कराती है।

काशी हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय के राजीव गांधी दक्षिण परिसर मे विश्व आर्द्रभूमि दिवस के अवसर पर पर्यावरण विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगिकी के स्नातकोत्तर प्रथम वर्ष के छात्रों के बीच मनाया गया । इस अवसर पर स्वयंसेवी संस्थान विंध्य पारिस्थितिकी एवम प्राकृतिक इतिहास संस्थान (विंध्य बचाओ) कार्यकर्ता सुधांशु कुमार छात्रों को इस वर्ष के लिए निर्धारित  विषय “आर्द्रभूमि और जैव-विविधता” पर अपने विचार रखे तथा आर्द्रभूमि जैव-विविधता और उसके महत्व पर छात्रों से चर्चा किया। छात्रों को जैव-विविधता क्यों महत्वपूर्ण हैं विषय पर बने विडिओ क्लिप भी दिखाया गया।  छात्रों ने निश्चय किया है की कल (2 फरवरी) को सुबह 7 बजे से परिसर मे स्थित चेकडैम (मानव निर्मित आद्रभूमि) का भ्रमण कर उसके आस पास उपलब्ध जैव-विविधता के बारे मे जानने का प्रयास करेंगे।

ज्ञात हो की भारत 1 फरवरी 1982 से इस संधि का हिस्सा है और इस वर्ष भारत के 10 आद्रभूमि को रामसार कन्वेन्शन द्वारा जारी अंतर्राष्ट्रीय महत्व के आद्रभूमियों की सूची मे शामिल किया गया है इसके साथ ही भारत मे अब कुल 37 अंतर्राष्ट्रीय महत्व के आद्रभूमि हो गए हैं, इन साइटों द्वारा कवर किया जाने वाला सतह क्षेत्र अब 1,067,939 हेक्टेयर है। उत्तर प्रदेश मे इसके पहले केवल एक ही आद्रभूमि इस सूची मे थी लेकिन नई सूची मे उत्तरप्रदेश के 6 (नवाबगंज, पार्वती आगरा, समन, समसपुर, सांडी और सरसईनवार) वेट्लैन्ड स्थलों को जोड़े जाने से यह संख्या अब 7 हो गई है ।

वेटलैंड्स भोजन, पानी, भूजल पुनर्भरण, जल शोधन, बाढ़ मॉडरेशन, कटाव नियंत्रण और जलवायु विनियमन जैसे महत्वपूर्ण संसाधनों और पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र सेवाओं की एक विस्तृत श्रृंखला प्रदान करते हैं। वे वास्तव में, पानी का एक प्रमुख स्रोत हैं और मीठे पानी की हमारी मुख्य आपूर्ति आर्द्रभूमि की एक सरणी से आती है जो वर्षा को सोखने और भूजल को रिचार्ज करने में मदद करती है। ये सभी आद्रभूमी प्रवासी पक्षियों को अस्थयी आवास के रूप में बहुत ही पसंद आता है।

इको वन का एक छोटा सा प्रयास

काशी हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय के राजीव गाँधी दक्षिणी परिसर से संचालित इको वन (Eco1) को पुनर्जीवित करने के प्रयास के तहत स्नातकोत्तर पर्यावरण विज्ञान ( पर्यावरण प्रौद्योगिकी) के छात्र छात्राओं ने 28 अक्टूबर 2017, शनिवार को विण्डम फॉल, मड़िहान स्तिथ प्राथमिक विद्यालय(कक्षा 1- कक्षा 5) में जाकर वहां के विद्यार्थियों को पर्यावरण और उसे स्वच्छ बनाने के प्रति उन्हें जागरूक किया, उन्हें पौधा रोपण, पानी के संरक्षण जैसे विषयों पर भी विद्यार्थियों को जागरूक किया गया |

रविवार 29 अक्टूबर 2017 को प्रातः 8 बजे Eco 1 क्लब के सदस्य छात्रों एवम शिवालिक छात्रावास के कुछ छात्रों के साथ मिलकर परसिर को साफ और स्वच्छ बनाने के लिए शिवालिक छात्रवास के सामने एक कूड़ेदान को लगाया, जो एक 500 ली० वाले पानी टंकी से बनाया,और साथ ही सभी छात्रों  को अवगत कराया गया की वो अपना कूड़ा कूड़ेदान में ही डाले।

World Migratory Bird Day..Why the visit of migratory birds decreased worldwide ?

                                              

The visit of migratory birds has decreased worldwide! It is true, but before talking about that we need to know why do birds migrate? Birds migrate to move from areas of decreasing resources i.e. food and nesting locations, to the areas of high or increasing resources. According to the distance covered in migration the birds are Permanent Residents, Short-distance migrants, Medium-distance migrants and Long-distance Migrants. Many articles and news in the media tells us that the migratory birds has decreased. Well what is the reason? The reason is us, our greeds and over-exploitation of resources. The migratory birds don’t migrate anymore and that is because of many reasons that include:

·         The loss of habitats in their migratory route has taken away the source of fuel on the flyway.

·         Climate change patterns and global warming leads for the change in route of migratory birds, shortening their route or cancelling the journey at all.

·         Mild winters help resident birds to survive that leads to competiton and shortage of food and nesting locations for migratory birds.

·         Climate change leads to food shortages because vegetation bloom, insect population rise and bird hatchings are not in line of occurrence due to climate change patterns.

·         Poorly co-ordinated conservation measures and inadequate protection.

A migratory bird relies on different geographical locations in their migration routes for their fuel, shelter and nesting, and the protecting their breeding areas is not enough because any broken link in the chain will affect the entire population.

The journeys undertaken by these birds are remarkable, like Sooty Shearwater flies 64,000 kilometres from the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas to the Arctic.

One study by CEED found that out of 1,451 migratory bird species, 1,324 had inadequate protection for at least one part of their migration pathway. 18 species had no protection in their breeding areas and 2 species had no protection at all along their whole route.

Less than 3% of the species listed as threatened in IUCN Red List have sufficient protected areas. Red-spectacled Amazon is a migratory parrot of Brazil and is threatened by habitat loss still less than 4% of its range is protected, and almost none of its seasonal breeding areas in southern Brazil have been covered. There are many records of decrease in number of migratory birds in India, China and Pakistan.

For the protection of migratory birds all the nations have to trake collaborative steps because steps taken in one nation cannot protect any migratory bird along its range. Like Germany has protected 98% of the migratory species that pass its borders but less than 13 % of its species are protected at a global range.

For the awareness among public about the decrease in migratory birds worldwide, World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated on May 11-12 every year since 2006, and it was created by US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.

Earth Hour : Embracing Darkness for a Greener World

Keeping on the tradition, this year too, the residents of RGSC, BHU celebrated the ninth edition of The Earth Hour with enthusiasm and vigor. On the moonlit evening of 28^th March 2015, on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, the Indian subcontinent joined the world in celebrating The Earth Hour by switching of electricity from 08:30pm – 09:30 pm. RGSC,BHU which has been actively celebrating Earth Hour for consecutively 4 years now, once again glowed the path by embracing darkness for the cause of better, cleaner and sustainable Environment.

If the readers be reminded then Earth Hour is a worldwide event started in the year 2007, in Sydney where 3000 office complexes switched off their electricity in order to express their solidarity for the cause of Climate Change. This event has now become a worldwide phenomenon which is currently seen not only as a tool for awareness but also as a dedication to prevailing climate change issues. Many metropolitan cities like New York, Sydney, Nairobi, London, Paris etc. (the list has now reached to more than hundred) have officially accepted the importance of this event and have been actively switching off light and organizing awareness programs. Worldwide 170 countries, 1200 landmarks and 40 UNESCO World Heritage have confirmed their participation in this year’s Earth Hour. India has been celebrating this Hour actively since 2009. Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar etc. have also celebrated the seventh edition of the event at official level.

Coming back to RGSC, BHU, the member of Eco1 made sure that all the denizens of the 6 hostels of RGSC got the news about Earth Hour. At sharp 08:30 pm, all the hostels switched off their light and came out of their respective hostels with candles to commemorate the Earth Hour. The whole process was supervised by Raj Maurya and his co- members of Eco1 who visited various hostels and made sure that the importance of the day is known to the students.  The starry sky and the moonlit night provided the perfect relaxing mood to appreciate the Nocturnal Beauty of RGSC. The gathering not only discussed about the various concerns regarding climate change, but also bonded over the recent calamity of Indian Team in Australia. Such was their enthusiasm some even suggested of celebrating Earth Hour every week!!! And truly so, a simple tip of the finger calculation shows that if the lights (fans excluded) of six hostels in RGSC is switched off for an hour then grossly 80kwh of electricity is saved, hence saving  5-6 quintals of coal. Thus is the impact of celebrating Earth Hour by just RGSC Campus. What really matters is the voluntary participation of the students which shows their solemn solidarity for the cause of larger issue of Climate Change.  

Once again the residents of RGSC have proved that if given a slight nudge, we are able to achieve much greater feats. Especially when it comes to Environmental issues.  Eco1, after its cleanliness drives, making the RGSC plastic free like etc. has added another remarkable feather to their hat by organizing Earth Hour consecutively for the 4^th time. This has proven the fact that we don’t only talk but also walk the talk. And that’s what’s actually required at this juncture to save our World. This year’s Earth Hour has and should show the politicians, bureaucrats and policymakers who are going to meet later this year at Paris to resolve a protocol based on The COP Lima 2014. Hopefully they show equal enthusiasm and genuine care in framing laws for our environment.

नम भूमि दिवस पर " मोक्ष दायिनी को मृत्यु क्यों "

२ फरवरी को नम भूमि दिवस के उपलक्ष में राजीव गांधी दक्षिणी परिसर के इको वन क्लब के सदस्यों एवं परिसर के छात्र-छात्राओं द्वारा नुक्कड़ नाटक का आयोजन किया गया। इस नुक्कड़ नाटक का विषय " मोक्ष दायिनी को मृत्यु क्यों " था जिसमें उन्होंने गन्दगी के कारण पवित्र गंगा माँ की दुर्दशा के बारे में बताया। इको वन के कार्यकर्ताओ ने बताया कि इस बार का नम भूमि दिवस का विषय " हमारे भविष्य के लिए नम भूमि " है। इस कार्यक्रम में परिसर के छात्र छात्राओं ने बढ़ चढ़ कर हिस्सा लिया। 

इस पूरे कार्यक्रम में १०० से अधिक छात्र व् छात्राएं उपस्थित थे। सभी विद्यार्थियों इस कार्यक्रम को लेकर बहुत उत्साहित नज़र आ रहे थे। इस कार्यक्रम को सफल बनाने में इको वन के कार्यकर्ताओं ने अपने कार्य को पूरी निष्ठा और लगन के साथ किया। यह कार्यक्रम डॉ अनिल पाण्डेय व् अन्य सदस्यों की देखरेख में सम्पन्न हुआ। ईको वन संस्था द्वारा गत चार वर्षों में इस तरह के कई कार्यक्रम विन्ध्य क्षेत्र में सम्पन्न हो चुके हैं जिनमें खड़ंजा फॉल व् विंढम फॉल भी सम्मिलित है।

गणतंत्र दिवस पर " इको वन " का सफाई अभियान

66वें गणतंत्र दिवस के शुभ अवसर पर राजीव गांधी दक्षिणी परिसर में "इको वन" क्लब के सदस्यों एवं परिसर के छात्र-छात्राओं ने "क्लीन कैंपस" अभियान का आयोजन किया जिसके अन्तर्गत परिसर की सफाई की और छात्र-छात्राओं को जागरूक भी किया।

अन्तर्राष्टीय जैव विविधता दिवस 2014

आज अन्तर्राष्टीय जैव विविधता दिवस के उपलक्ष्य में इको वन व् विंध्य बचाओ के सदस्यों ने यमुना बायोडायवर्सिटी पार्क का भ्रमण किया। इस भ्रमण का मुख्य उद्देश्य जैव विविधता के बारे में जानकारी प्राप्त करना था।

यमुना बायोडायवर्सिटी पार्क के वैज्ञानिक डॉ ए. क. सिंह, एक वनस्पतिशास्त्री, जो उन व्यक्तियों में से एक है जो यमुना जैव विविधता पार्क की स्थापना के लिए जिम्मेदार है, ने सदस्यों को जैव विविधता के महत्व के बारे में बताया तथा उसको होने वाले प्रभावों से अवगत कराया। वैज्ञानिक डॉ ए. क. सिंह ने यमुना बायोडायवर्सिटी पार्क के प्रारंभिक परिचय दिया। इस ५७ एकड़ में फैले यमुना बायोडायवर्सिटी पार्क में विविध प्रकार की जीव वनस्पति पाये जाते है जिनको यमुना के विभिन्न पार्को से एकत्रित किया गया। 

वैज्ञानिक डॉ ए. क. सिंह ने सभी सदस्यों को यमुना बायोडायवर्सिटी पार्क का भ्रमण कराया तथा यहाँ पाये जाने वाले विभिन्न प्रकार के जीव वनस्पति के बारे में बताया। इस भ्रमण में हमें पार्क से संबंधित कुछ उपयोगी जानकारी पता चला , जैसे कि यहाँ कितनी विभिन्न प्रकार की पौधों, जानवरों, पक्षियों एवं कीड़ों की प्रजातियाँ मौजूद है। हमें इस पार्क के बारे में कुछ आश्चर्य बातें पता चली जैसे कि कैसे यह पार्क कृषि भूमि से एक कार्यात्मक जैव विविधता पार्क करने से बदल गया।

ECO MANIA II: Prize Distribution Gala!!!

15^th April 2014, R.G.S.C: In yet another event of Eco1-BHU, the prize distribution of ECOMANIA II was held at Farmer’s Hostel and was presided by the O.S.D Dr. R.P. Singh, Chief Proctor Dr. Somu Singh, Dr. Anil Kr. Pandey and Mr. Vijai Krishna chaired the event. 

ECOMANIA II was held from 3^rd March- 10^th March 2014. This environment oriented Annual Competition focuses on encouraging creativity/innovation among students and in the process, imparting them environmental awareness. Many competitions like painting, slogan-writing, essay writing, poetry etc. not only allowed the students to exercise their intellectual soft skills but also innovative competitions like “Kabaad Se Jugaad” and photography allowed active involvement of the competitors.

The Prize Ceremony started as custom dictates with the BHU KULGEET. It was followed by the screening of three documentary movies namely “Vindhyan Scourge”, “The Miracle Water Village”, “The Vanishing Giants” which depicted various environmental problems ranging from the plight of Vindhyan region to the poaching of elephants and watershed management.

A pictorial presentation about ‘Eco1 BHU’ was presented eloquently by Saptarshi Dey explaining various aspects and activities of Eco1 BHU. His presentation was rightly backed by N. Manish’s speech which clearly stated various future aspirations for the participation of more active members and rigor actions to ascertain Eco1 BHU’s motto.

            
Dr. A.K Pandey, Asst. Prof. IESD, gave an insightful speech on the various possibilities by which Eco1 BHU can help the water scarce district of Mirzapur, especially villages nearby to BHU RGSC Campus. Eco1 BHU has to think not only about the campus RGSC but also utilize the intellectual knowledge of its able members in propagating environmental awareness amongst the people of nearby villages.  He emphasized on active participation of members in a more systematic and regular basis.

            

Dr. Somu Singh, Chief Proctor shared his past experience with Eco1 BHU. He shared some past achievements of Eco1 BHU like banning polythene bags in the campus. He opined that Eco1 BHU should initiate cultured practices which can be passed on to future batch and hence leading to stronger “eco-ethics” and eco-friendly practices in the campus. He gave many valuable notes on practicing eco-friendly methods like switching off lights when not in use, irrigating the saplings and taking care of them so as to make this campus into a green oasis in this barren and rocky terrain. He assured all possible help of teachers and faculties in future endeavors of Eco1 BHU and suggested more apparent contribution of members for Eco1 BHU.

Mr. Vijai Krishna, Asst. Prof IESD and adviser of Eco1 BHU advised the members to become inspiration for other students. He explained how Eco1 can be a non-formal source for environmental education.  He gave an approach of “Preach What You Practice” for environmental awareness. He asked the students to lead by action, creating healthy eco-friendly trends themselves so as to set an example for others. The event was elegantly hosted by Chitra Pokharia. The audience consisted of members and enthusiastic participants of EcoMania 2014. Finally the function was concluded with distribution of prizes to winners in various events of Eco Mania.

EARTH HOUR: Celebrating Darkness for Future Brightness

                                                                                   

Now-a-days it has become quite a trend to discuss about Environmental issues. Be it technical, social, academic, and even commercial and economical, fraternity from all the above spheres and more are coerced not only to consider the issues of Environment, but to act towards solving those issues. Environment has now taken the centre stage amongst the masses. And it arouses both concern and a sense of responsibility amongst the public notion. Rightly so too, because our Environment has never been so gravely threatened as it is now. It’s not simply about air pollution, water pollution; Environmental issues have now crossed International boundaries. Be it Global Warming or frequent climate disparages. Threat to environment is now considered a threat to not only humans and animals but a threat to Life.

            
Many concerned people are actively participating in invoking steps to safeguard our Environment. People from all social strata and all hemispheres are joining hands against saving our Earth from destruction.  Many innovative steps are being taken to spread awareness amongst masses regarding environment. One such step is Earth Hour.

            
Earth Hour’s was first celebrated on 31^st March 2007 in Sydney Australia. It was started by WWF-Australia with the aim to spread a message amongst masses that even a small change in our day-to-day lifestyle may bring about a lot change in the environment. Many time, people are flabbergasted by the enormity of the issues related to environment, to some it may even sound almost impossible to follow measures to safeguard environment. In order to make the notion of safeguarding environment simpler, and to reach to maximum people to contribute, Earth Hour seems to be an effective step. And from its inception in 2007, Earth Hour has become a really successful annual event. In 2013 only, more than 154 countries and 7002 cities pledged to switch off as many unwanted lights. The list goes on if we actually keep a tab. Many may ask how switching off light for only one hour can can contribute to environment. In 2013 only, India switching off light in 54 cities in Earth Hour saved 1000MW of electricity. To produce 1000 MW electricity,   approximately 3000 ton of fuel is burnt to vaporize 5096 liters of water. This is just a gross estimate; the actual value can actually increase. So we can guess how a small step of switching off light for 60minute can be helpful for the environment.

            
Earth hour doesn’t mean complete black out. It’s more a symbolic step, which seeks to bring about awareness among the masses that even a small step like switching off the light of a room before exiting, can actually impact on the environment. This event’s all about the awareness amongst people which is much required because safeguarding our environment is not a mammoth task, all it requires is a genuine will and step by step action towards issues in micro level. It is as much the responsibility of individuals as it is the responsibility of big industries and corporate houses.

            
If you really want to contribute to safeguard the Environment, start from your own house or office. Save energy, save water, save papers, save trees. These small contributions do matter for our Environment. Earth Hour represents this philosophy. Let’s turn the inspiration of an hour to action for our every hour. Switch Off your lights and enjoy the darkness!!!

Earth Hour celebration in RGSC,BHU by Students and Members of Eco1 BHU Club

                         

Students during Earth Hour Celebration

Earth Hour 2014 was celebrated in the Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, Banaras Hindu University (RGSC, BHU) with much zealous and pompous way. Students gladly participated in celebrating this hour (8:30PM - 9:30PM). They gladly switched of all the lights of their room. Even though exams lurking before them, students didn't hesitate to participate.

Lights in all hostels of RGSC BHU were switched off. Students went out of their rooms and gathered in front of their hostels to show their unity and willingness to participate and celebrate the earth hour. During this, students taken oath of doing this in future for saving energy.

Oath ceremony for Earth Hour 

This step of the students of RGSC BHU only reaffirms their pledge to make their campus not only Zero Waste, Clean Campus but also Energy Efficient Campus. The events were initiated and coordinated by members of Eco1 BHU club. In making this campaign successful, all students from different departments of RGSC BHU taken part enthusiastically.

Students of RGSC sent Petition to Ministry of Enviornment and Forests against proposed Thermal Power Plant near the campus

The concerns regarding the impact of proposed thermal power plant by M/s Welspun Energy from the Rajiv Gandhi South Campus is now becoming larger. After the Registrar, Banaras Hindu University wrote to Ministry of Environment and Forests in September, 2013 - more than 550 students of the South campus sent a petition alleging the company on issues as follows:

1. The Public Hearing was not communicated to us and hence, we could not register our objections.


2. The EIA report has no mention about the BHU South Campus despite the fact that it lies within 10 Km of the project site and no impacts of the project on the university campus is been discussed.

3. Whereas, the Upper Khajuri dam is to be used and 40,00,000 liters of water is to be pumped, there is no mention of the river Khajuri and the impacts on this river due to the proposed thermal power plant. Company has also mentioned about filling up the Upper Khajuri dam with water from Ganges. There is no doubt that all these activities will danger the existence and water quality of the river but the Lower Khajuri dam is also under great danger as our drinking water supply is from Lower Khajuri dam. Wyndham fall and Kharanja fall are integral part of the River Khajuri and Upper Khajuri dam is the source of the river, impact on which finds no mention in the EIA report.

Apart from being a tourist place-Khajuri River, Wyndham fall and Kharanja fall is an important part of the culture and life of the students of BHU South Campus. We visit the places very frequently and has been taking care of these water falls including its cleanliness with Forest Department. Hence, we won't tolerate any kind of alteration to the river source and its quality.

Judgement

The judgement for best entries would be done by a committee constituting Wardens, Teaching staff and any other persons appointed by Eco One Management Council. The decision of judges would be final. The entries once submitted to Eco One would be property of Eco One and can be used for useful purposes giving due credit.
